Trips can be arranged with departure from Portegrandi via the River Sile, the Canale Silone canal and the shoals of the northern stretch of the lagoon. First stop at Torcello, which is considered Venice’s ‘matrix’. Torcello hosts the oldest basilica of the entire lagoon, dating back to 639 AD. Also to be found here are many Roman remains, the famous Ponte del Diavolo bridge, the Trono di Attila (the throne of Atilla the Hun) and the renowned Locanda Cipriani (one of Ernest Hemingway’s favourite retreats).
Our boat then takes us to Burano, the island famous for its lace work and its coloured houses, as well as the Church of San Martino, hosting one of Gianbattista Tiepolo’s first paintings. We might visit the famed Lace Museum, and the traditional shops with their embroiderers ready to produce a work on the spot. And why not try out the well-known “bussoeai” biscuits here?
We then go on to the island of Murano, famous worldwide for its glassware (a trade dating back hundreds and hundreds of years). Here, we can pay a visit to the famed Glass Museum and the Romanesque-Byzantine church of Saints Maria and Donato
